Remote Sensing

One of the coming up applications of remote technologies is remote sensing. As William Gail from the Microsoft Corp. wrote, he is expecting the most important advances in remote sensing during the next decade not from advances in sensors themselves but rather from novel ways in using sensors, combining sensor information, and deriving knowledge from that information [22]. Sensors will be combined in grids; the delivery of information will be combined with the latest achievements in networking. Active and passive sensors will be augmented by “interactive” remote sensing. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) for example could be such a technology, but also other kinds of technology like ZigBee. Applications are expected in medicine, genetic engineering, environmental engineering, weather forecast, automation etc. The networks are not only wide area networks (wired or wireless), but also networks with a very small range of action.

It is expected that remote sensor networks will be a new source of information by itself, delivered by government agencies and some big commercial companies capable of fielding large-scale expansive sensor systems and a lot small companies, delivering local information. The vision for this is a Wiki-like global remote sensing network, opening a lot of new challenges, but also opening also a lot of technical and non-technical questions, how the access, store, and share of this huge amount of information or the protection of the private sphere etc.
