Learning in Online Lab Environment

A
theoretical framework for learning in online lab environment could be taken
from the theory of action learning and action research (experimental learning)
[2]. However, these theories were constructed for learning in and with “social”
environments. In the case of online labs, we have to deal with the hard facts
of nature. Nevertheless, the experimental learning cycle (action – reflection -
action) is also important for online lab learning. The aim of the result is not
to change the behavior or the organization, but to enhance and deepen the
understanding of nature and teaching artifacts.
Other approaches like self-directed and
collaborative learning [1], [3] are also strongly connected to the open learning
environments. But these approaches do not strongly reflect the experimental
“side” of learning in online lab environment. A developer of online labs needs
here the help of learning theory to develop systematic approach to learning in
online lab environments.
The learning possibilities are efficient in an online situation because the student can repeat his/her simulations or experiments and play around with different parameters values for several times. Although he/she can work in the lab 24 hours a day and seven days a week, he/she needs a plan for experiment testing under several conditions because the experiment work assigning time is limited. A Web browser and good Internet connection are only prerequisites for such laboratory work.
